The herbal garden in APS Kanpur is an NMPB Project that has been developed with an objective to provide our young students an opportunity to be familiar with the use of medicinal and aromatic plants so that this knowledge is also passed on to the younger generation. It is a good way of making our students aware and acquainted with the commonly available and frequently used medicinal plants that have been used in our traditional Indian system of medicine to cure several diseases and rejuvenate our health since ancient times. These medicinal plants are an invaluable biological resource closely associated with health care, traditions and culture and our natural system of Ayurveda.
Our herbal garden displays over 25 species of medicinal and aromatic plants.Among some of them are Cymbopogon (Lemon grass), Withania somnifera ,(Ashwagandha),Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi),Ocimum sanctum(Tulsi) etc.Description of each herbal plant with botanical and common name and its uses has been displayed through name plates. Students are encouraged to learn more about medicinal plants by planting these herbs and actually watching them grow. This helps them to realize the importance of collaborative team work, integration of the concept with other subject matter activities and also motivates them to explore and enhance their knowledge besides being a fun filled activity.
Educating our children by giving them an opportunity to be aware and help in the upkeep of these indigenous valuable medicinal plants is our goal so that our dear students develop love for nature and environment and learn the importance of biodiversity conservation, development and Sustainable Management of environment from their childhood.
